Piemont gilt als berühmtestes Weinanbaugebiet Italiens. Die im Nordwesten Italiens liegende Region grenzt im Norden an die Schweiz und im Westen an Frankreich. Piemont gliedert sich in drei verschiedene, landschaftlich gut unterscheidbare Teile, die verschiedene Voraussetzungen für den Weinanbau bieten: Die Alpenregion im Norden, die Po-Ebene sowie das Hügelland im Südosten, wo die meisten Weinanbaugebiete Piemonts liegen. Drei Rotweinsorten aus dem Weinanbaugebiet Piemont sind weltweit bekannt und werden von Weinkennern seit vielen Jahrzehnten geschätzt: Barolo, Barbera und Barbaresco. Der Barolo wurde bereits in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als "Wein der Könige" berühmt und erfuhr in den 1980er Jahren einen erneuten Aufschwung. Barolo und Barbaresco sind zwei der bedeutendsten Rotweine Italiens und gehören zu den wenigen in der Welt, die nur aus einer einzigen Rebsorte gewonnen werden: der Nebbiolo. Die Nebbiolo-Traube ist eine alte, einheimische Sorte, die wahrscheinlich aus dem Aosta-Tal stammt und heute praktisch nur im Piemont angebaut wird.
