Das Wort Spirituosen wird von dem lateinischen Wort „spirituosa“ abgeleitet und bedeutet „Geistiges“. Umgangssprachlich werden Spirituosen auch einfach Schnaps genannt. Durch Vergärung von zuckerhaltigen Lösungen, Maische, Getreide oder durch einlegen von Beeren und Früchten in Alkohol wird der Ausgangsstoff von Spirituosen hergestellt. Danach folgt eine einfache oder mehrfache Destillation. Dieser Vorgang wird auch Brennen genannt. Im Allgemeinen wird der Alkoholgehalt durch den Zusatz von Wasser auf Trinkstärke herabgesetzt. Zur Aromatisierung von manchen Spirituosen werden beim Destillieren geringe Mengen an Pflanzenextrakten zugesetzt. Durch das Lagern in Holzfässern (bevorzugt aus Eichenholz) erhalten viele Spirituosen ihren Farbton.
